Artists:

Friction ( Shogun Audio, UK )

Brighton raised, multi award winning DJ Friction is a member of an exclusive club. He is one of a handful of DJ’s to have smashed through the ranks and become a superstar in his genre simply through an unbelievable talent behind the decks. This year has seen him add more accolades to his ever increasing CV and is regarded by many as not only the most skilled but the most diverse DJ in Drum ‘n’ Bass.

In February ’99 Friction released his debut single ‘Critical Mass’ under the name Kinnetix on the ’Under Fire’ label. Soon after he produced a track for TOV: ‘Here Comes Trouble’ EP with the defining track ‘Photon’. Things were most definitely moving for this talented, hugely motivated young man from Brighton. Immediately following that was the acclaimed ‘Altitude’ with Stakka & Skynet, regarded throughout the scene as a truly ground breaking piece of Drum ‘n’ Bass, fusing high energy techno and jungle, helping to start what was regarded by many as the ’Neurofunk’ sound.

Releases followed on a host of top Drum ‘n’ Bass labels including Valve, Tru Playaz, Passenger, Hardware, 31 Records, Hospital and Charge to name a few.

After joining BBC 1Xtra in 2002, he made his mark quickly. His ’Mix Show’ was truly ground-breaking, creating a massive following worldwide, reluctantly calling it a day after two years with a constantly growing schedule proving too much. Numerous awards followed, including ‘Best Newcomer’ in the ’Drum & Bass Arena’ Awards in 2002, ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ at the 2003 ’Knowledge Magazine Awards’, another ’Best Newcomer’ at the 2004 ’Accelerated Culture Awards’, Runner Up at The Raveology DnB awards 2007 and finally ’Best DJ’ at the MTV Romania Awards in 2007.

Friction’s mix CD’s have also grown in quality and popularity. The Bingo Sessions Vol.1 Cd (with DJ Zinc) on Bingo was a massive hit, charting in the national LP top 40 and was followed with the first of his own highly successful series ’The Next Level’ which has gone on to sell thousands worldwide. More recognition was to follow with his jaw dropping Pete Tong ’Essential Mix’ which aired April 2006 to huge acclaim. In Pete Tong’s own words DJ Friction really had become one of the Drum ‘n’ Bass ’Big Dogs’.

His remix of ’Back To Your Roots’ released on Shogun in 2007 was also regarded as the biggest Drum ‘n’ ass track of the year and received plays from Annie Mac to the Stanton Warriors to Judge Jules. Around the same time he began to dabble with the Breaks scene, playing at select events around the world, joining Aquasky in the studio to produce the uncompromising anthem ’Control Freak’, released on their 2007 ’This Way Up’ LP on Passenger.

Whether he’s on two or three decks, playing for two hours or four, people are rapidly learning that, Drum ‘n’ Bass fanatics or not, a night with Friction will be one to remember!

Back to line up

Ed Rush ( Virus Recordings, UK )

Ed Rush is one of the current leaders of the new school Drum ‘n’ Bass. One of the originators to bring back the dark sounds of Drum ‘n’ Bass and push it to new levels, Ed Rush continues to make waves with each new release.

Born in west London, Ed Rush originally started out into Hip Hop and electro but eventually found the growing underground rave scene. Fascinated by the breaks in the hardcore sounds at the time, Ed Rush convinced his neighbor, Nico Sykes, to let him produce tracks with him.

Eventually they released "Bludclot Artattack" in 1993 - a journey into the dark-core sounds. While most releases at the time had a certain momentum and feel, the track was like no other, and marked the shift of hard-core’s split into Drum ‘n’ Bass.

Ed Rush eventually released follow-ups nearly two years later, this time with DJ Trace, on "The Mutant" in 1995. "Guncheck" soon followed, another track developed in a recognizable Ed Rush style - gangsta attitude, and crunchy basslines.

Ed Rush soon found himself on the cusp of prominence, as his releases in 1996 on the Techsteppin’ compilation, the Skylab EP on the Metalheadz label, and "Killimanjaro" on the Prototype label all helped to define the genres’ direction towards techstep, a two-step style of Drum ‘n’ Bass. He subsequently released more tracks on various labels, and his popularity as an artist grew, as did his sound as a producer.

The greatest collaboration was ahead of him though, when he teamed up with Optical. They created their own label, Virus, and their first release was "Medicine/Punchbag," Their eventual LP, Wormhole in 1998, was released to critical and underground success, and is regarded as a genre classic, as the sounds from that album again redefined the direction Drum ‘n’ Bass was headed, and solidified their status as the forerunners of the new sound of Drum ‘n’ Bass.

More recently, after a slew of other releases, Ed Rush and Optical have released another genre-defining LP, the Creeps. This was again met with critical and commercial success, as the album helped them to win Knowledge drum and bass award for producers of the year.

Look out for the eagerly anticipated forth coming album Chameleon.

Icicle ( Shogun Audio, UK )

Icicle was born Jeroen Snik in Holland. At the Age of 8 he first started playing piano, progressing to the drum kit and soon making beats using a basic midi set-up. Aged 15 he became hooked on Drum ‘n’ Bass after going to a local night called "Jungle Galaxy". Getting some turntables and better music making software followed and Icicle was on his way.

Taking inspiration from the dirty bass-lines of heroes Jonny L and Optical and the intricate drum patterns of Photek and Source Direct, Icicle’s cold, tech funk sounds have quickly earned him DJ support from Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Fabio, London Elektricity, Pendulum, Andy C, Friction, D-Bridge, Flight, Noisia and Commix amongst countless others.

In the space of two short years he has built-up an enviable catalogue of releases on prestige labels including Ram Records, Shogun Audio, Critical Recordings, Renegade Hardware and Subtitles and become a mainstay on the UK DJ circuit, regularly playing venues including Fabric and The End whilst maintaining a hectic touring schedule stretching from Europe to Japan.

2009 saw Icicle relocating to London whilst busily working on his debut album for DJ Friction’s Shogun Audio, the label with whom he recently signed exclusively. Tours of Australia and New Zealand were on the cards alongside extensive album support with the rest of the Shogun family.

Back to line up

Alix Perez ( Shogun Audio, UK )

North London based DJ/producer Alix Perez is one of the strongest young producers in the Drum ‘n’ Bass scene and undoubtedly one of its most prolific up and coming DJs. Already with a number of releases on established labels such as Shogun Audio, Liquid V, Bassbin, Creative Source, Horizons, Progress, Brigand and Fokuz, there aren’t many Drum ‘n’ Bass DJs on the circuit without a Perez tune in their bag.

Originally from Belgium, Drum ‘n’ Bass comes naturally to 22-year-old Alix, who has immersed himself in music from an early age. Alix started to DJ at the age of 14 and progressed into production at 17, collaborating with other hotly tipped artists such as Jenna G, Redeyes, Sabre, MC Fats, Spectrasoul and Specific.

With regular appearances at Fabio’s legendary "Swerve" night and Bar Rumba’s well-respected "Movement" weekly, Alix is also receiving bookings worldwide from Paris to Toronto. With his smooth yet sophisticated selection, drawing for all the latest dubs, he does not fail as a DJ. Alix also has numerous tracks play-listed on BBC 1Xtra and receives heavy support from respected players within the scene: from Bukem to Bailey, he has been repped as "the one to watch" and "representing the future of Drum ‘n’ Bass."

Alix has recently been featured on the front cover of ATM Magazine as one of the "leaders of the nu-skool" and has had a variety of press across worldwide dance magazines; he has also been nominated for two awards as Breakthrough DJ and Breakthrough Producer of the year at the BBC 1Xtra Bass Awards. It goes without saying that his strong exposure and reputation for putting the soul back into Drum ‘n’ Bass is well-earned.

Spectrasoul ( Shogun Audio, Critical, Metalheadz, UK )

The last 12 months has seen SpectraSoul rise as one of the most exciting new talents within the Drum ‘n’ Bass scene, and they continue to ride the crest of the wave of new producers.

Having spent the last year defining and refining their musical techniques, SpectraSoul have gained a reputation for bridging the gap between light & dark, hard & smooth, both in the studio and within their DJ sets. Last year saw the release of highly acclaimed "III Note Soul" and "Cherry Smoke" on Shogun:LTD, with both tracks gaining support from all the main players in the game and securing their place on the DnB map. Releases have snowballed from there on, with signings to Renegade Recordings, WestBay International, Soundtrax, a debut EP on Nu:Directions, and further releases on DJ Friction’s Shogun Audio and SGN:LTD imprints.

Showcasing their talents on the turntables at some of the most prestigious venues throughout the UK and Europe, SpectraSoul have gained residencies at Shogun events in both London and Brighton, and prove to be a popular choice for promoters across the globe with an ever-growing booking schedule for 2008. Having gained solid DJ support from the likes of Friction, Fabio, DJ Marky, Klute, Logistics, Commix, Break and D-Bridge amongst others, the duo’s sound has echoed around dance floors worldwide.

2009 saw releases from SpectraSoul on some of the biggest labels within Drum ‘n’ Bass, collaborations with other pioneer producers and some exciting remix projects, another big year for the duo.

Lenzman ( Metalheadz, C.I.A, Shogun Audio, NL )

Emerging from relative obscurity, Dutch producer Lenzman is fast making waves in the Drum ‘n’ Bass world with his deep and soulful take on this underground genre. Influenced by Hiphop, Soul, Jazz and life in general, Lenzman’s music combines the organic grooves of yesterday years with the energy and forward thinking attitude of Drum ‘n’ Bass music.

Since his first signings on the rapidly expanding Spearhead Records, Lenzman has feverishly been developing his sound. This led to his late 2008 / early 2009 releases: “Ever So Slightly” (on Integral), “Emeralds” (on Shogun Ltd) and his remix of Total Science classic “Soul Patrol” (on C.I.A.). These tracks have received widespread support, in clubs - from the scene’s most influential deejays - to daytime radio in the UK, and cemented his name as one of the fastest rising stars in this Drum ‘n’ Bass thing.

With well-received gigs in Asia and throughout Europe, Lenzman’s deejaying has begun taking off as well. A deejay long before he took up production, it’s not surprising that his schedule has become, and will continue to become busier.

Recently Lenzman has stepped things up a notch, signing new music to respected labels such as Metalheadz, 31 Records, Shogun Ltd, Integral, C.I.A. and Subtitles. As well as working more with talented vocalists such as Jo-s and Riya, Lenzman also has collaborations in the pipeline with Lynx, Spy, Random Movement and there are even whispers of an album project.

The future is looking brighter and brighter for this rising star...

Back to line up

SP:MC ( Shogun Audio, Exit Records, UK )

Within the last 5 years, SP:MC has established himself as one of the busiest and most innovative MCs in both Drum ‘n’ Bass and dubstep. As well working closely with front-runners DJ Friction, D-Bridge, Breakage and Youngsta, he holds residencies at leading nights including Shogun Audio, A Bunch of Cuts and Club Autonomic.

His passion for the music undoubtedly comes through on the mic. With a unique flow and the confidence to leave space for the beats to breathe, it’s clear that SP is an MC who only compliments and never competes with the DJ.

With a deep understanding of the music he’s so passionate about, SP has proved himself to be a talented producer in his own right. Recent releases on Tempa (alongside Joker D) and Shogun LTD (with Jubei and Dakuan as Code3) have demonstrated both quality and diversity, whatever the tempo. With another 12" on Tempa dropping soon, plus a Code3 release on D-Bridge’s Exit Records, 2009 looks was yet another great year !

Back to line up

MC Wrec ( Hospital Records, Moms the Word, UK )

Wrec is one of the UK’s most in-demand MCs, working with everyone from Hospital Records to Timo Maas and the Nextmen.

When not busy touring, he’s running Mum’s The Word music management, looking after some of the hottest up-coming acts in town.

Back to line up

One87 & DMC ( Critical, Star Warz, BE/NL )

One87 bought his first records when he was 10 years old ... and started DJ’ing when he was 15. Solid breakbeats & phat basslines were the things in music that attracted him the most. Little later, One87 started playing Jungle …what became Drum ’n’ Bass later on ... which made his name well known in Belgium & beyond ;-)

After promoting his first events (starting in 1996, with guests such as Ed Rush & Fierce,) and opening his DJ-record shop ‘Fried Chicken Records’, he formed the Millennium Kru. That was somewhere in the late nineties… and was truly something else! It was one of the most skillful & diverse Drum ’n’ Bass sound systems around. The number of high-class bookings & top residencies they did speak for themselves... And it was also around that same time that One87 created ‘Star Warz’ (in association with M.K. from Kozzmozz), without a doubt the finest Drum ’n’ Bass concept Belgium has ever seen!

One87 has also been producing his own music lately and signed some tunes on Critical Music, Vampire Records and Nemesis Recordings.

In the beginning of 2008 One87 decided to go solo again, with over 750 Jungle/Drum ’n’ Bass DJ-sets under his belt. Well, not really solo… One87 can be booked together with MC Jay or , as this time, DMC .. Together they bring you the freshest Drum ’n’ Bass!

Back to line up

Etnik & Fuzz ( Bassline, Leuven )

Etnik & Fuzz were given the chance to organise the monthly Bassline events halfway through 2007. They have been pushing the local scene in Leuven ever since, inviting both international artists and upcoming talents from all over the country. Gaining more and more confidence from the crowds they played for, bigger events in and outside Belgium came, giving these two dj’s more fame every time. After numerous bookings the last 5 years, they have proven to know exactly what the crowd wants. Constantly refining their musical choices and carefully searching after combo’s make their sets a harmonic balance between pleasure and education.
