Post Re: 04 Sat : Star Warz! with Commix & Icicle @ Vooruit - Gand BE
Concept:

Star Warz always unites the nicest international names ( Goldie, Storm,
D-Bridge, Doc Scott, and many more) with the most talented international
newbies ( Commix, Lynx, Black Sun Empire, Survival, ... ) and Belgian
talents (One87, D Convict, Juice Blender, ...) As such Star Warz represents
all styles and evolutions within the scene and gives their public a broad
look into the Drum ‘n’ Bass spectrum. Time after time, the Star Warz crowd
is treated with the best that Drum ‘n’ Bass has to offer…and this time
that’s a collaboration with Critical :

Critical is the brainchild of producer, DJ and all-round-good-D&B-egg Kasra.
Started out of frustration at the lack of quality tune filtering being
practiced by some major imprints, the label has gradually gathered pace
through carefully selected releases and now occupies a unique, hard-fought
and respected place in the drum n bass scene. At a time when new labels were
started on a daily basis and failing after three months, Kasra put his all
into the imprint and stood firm, the label’s success proving a testament to
his ability to rise above the negative context and turn what seemed like
inevitable failure into a sweet success.

As Critical has grown, so has its reputation and popularity. Prominent
producers such as Calibre, Silent Witness, Break, Breakage, Chris Su,
Bungle, and D.Kay sought a release on the label resulting in several of
their tracks being signed and unleashed onto the vinyl market. 2008 saw the
first exclusive talent signing to Critical in the form of bright young thing
producer Inside Info, whose huge sound was unleashed on the listening public
on the first ever Critical EP, Critical Sound, released in September.

2007 saw label boss Kasra putting his A&R skills to the ultimate test with
the first Critical album project. Released in October 2007, the All Sounds
Electric album featured the talents of Break, Silent Witness, Calibre and
Dkay, among others. The project got five star reviews across the music press
and was one of Knowledge Magazines top albums of the year. In October 2008
the follow up, All Sounds Electric 2 hit the streets. With tracks from
Vicious Circle, Marcus Intalex, Commix, Inside Info and more as well as an
accompanying mix CD, the new release might even steal the march on its 2007
predecessor.

Already this past year, Critical has put out the massive Lost Hours by
Icicle, Endless by Sabre & Vicious Circle and Alibi by Spectrasoul. With
tracks from Survival and Bungle, plus the brand new Critical EP (Critical
Sound) featuring the production skills of Break, Loxy & Naibu, Inside Info
and Lomax & Kasra next to the second All Sounds Electric, this wad a bumper
(and hard working!) year for the Critical team.

And there’s no let up in quality music from the Critical stable in 2009.
Across the next 12 months expect releases from the likes of Silent Witness,
Alix Perez & Survival, Commix, Sabre, Spectrasoul, Break and Vicious Circle.

For now they keep on spreading the Critical vibe worldwide with an extensive
tour. And off course, Star Warz ( stated by Commix as one of the best Drum
‘n’ Bass parties around in Knowledge magazine ) had to be part of their
schedule ! Most Critical artists have played Star Warz before and are very
big fans of the Belgian party-people ! They are all also active on lots of
other world-leading Drum ‘n’ Bass labels such as Metalheadz, Shogun Audio,
Soul:R, No U-Turn and many more !

Artists:

Break (Symmetry, UK)

Acquiring a love for the break-beat through jazz and funk records, Break
took to the drums at a young age, learning piano along the way and taking to
the turntables at the age of fourteen. A talented musician with a wide range
of influences, Break looks to push the barriers in whatever he’s doing.
Crisp breaks, heavy bass and strong melody are stable marks of his
productions making him a firm favorite with a variety of the scenes top DJs.

Break hooked up with the DNAudio crew back in 2001 after meeting Squire
through mutual friends. Since then he has played an important role in the
label’s expansion, working closely with Silent Witness in developing a fresh
& devastating new sound. DJ A-Sides was quick to sign Break’s debut,
Cocktail for the ‘East Side Jamz 2’ LP and wasted no time releasing his
first solo twelve, ‘Sticky Situation’, the ‘Breakout EP’ and a string of
other singles.

His partnership with Silent Witness lead to releases on No U Turn and since
then Break hasn’t looked back. As one of the most prolific producers in the
scene, long hours in the studio have lead to outings on East Side, Fuze,
Commercial Suicide, Quarantine, Critical, Invaderz, Explicit, Subtitles,
Metalheadz, Levitated, Shadow Law and DNAudio; all building on Break’s
reputation as one of the drum & bass’ hottest new talents.

Now working closely with Fierce and with singer Kyo, Break’s output shows no
sign of slowing despite a busy DJ schedule that has taken him around Europe
and the USA.

Commix (Metalheadz, UK)

George Levings [24] and Guy Brewer [24] aka Commix have been producing music
together for about the last 4 years based out of Cambridge, England. After
putting out 12"s on New Id, Tangent and Aquasonic, things started to go from
strength to strength for Commix in 2003, with releases on Hospital, Liquid
V, Advanced and Doc Scott’s 31 Records as well as high profile remixes for
Dj Die "Autumn", Bebel Gilberto "Aganju" and Adam F & Fresh’s "Sun Goes
Down".

Commix have received major club and radio support from a host of DJ’s
including Fabio, Grooverider, Bryan G, SS, LTJ Bukem, London Elektricity,
High Contrast, Doc Scott, Nu Tone, Flight and Bailey. More releases are to
be found on Hospital, Liquid V, Metalheadz, Innerground, and Teebee’s
Subtitles label as well as a remix of Friction "Soulsurfer" for Valve
Recordings !

Commix are without a doubt one of the new revelations in Drum ‘n’ Bass !
And they astonished the world even more with their very first album : Call
to mind, which was released last year !

Marcus Intalex (Soul:R , UK)

Marcus’ passion for music was born in his native Manchester, where his
interest for the music grew as the scene developed and, after landing his
first professional dj gig at the tender age of 17, Marcus went on to work at
the infamous Eastern Bloc record store. From here he established himself on
the Manchester scene and began producing tracks together with fellow
Mancunian Mark XTC as Da Intalex, appearing on Flex Recordings.

A chance meeting in the early 90’s, through Flex boss L Double, led to
Marcus pairing up with producer and engineer ST Files and gave rise to the
partnership we know today as MIST. In 1999, the pair’s ground-breaking
release ‘How You Make Me Feel’ (on Doc Scott’s 31 Records) began a new
soulful movement in drum and bass at a time when the scene was driven by
predominantly dark and aggressive sounds. Following up their success with a
series of high-profile remixes for MJ Cole, Un:Cut, 4 Hero and Solid State,
MIST duly established themselves as leaders in the field.

In 2001 they set-up their own label Soul:r, to release their own music and
that of like-minded artists such as Calibre, High Contrast, DJ Marky and
D:Kay. Since then the label has grown to be one of the most respected in the
scene and reflects Marcus’ own strong personal ethics, releasing innovative
drum and bass with musical integrity. Last year’s DAT Music project, in
collaboration with younger sibling Revolve:r, saw Soul:r once again pushing
boundaries with a series of strong and ambitious releases from artists
including Klute, D-Bridge, Martyn, and Marcus Intalex himself. In 2007,
Soul:r continues to drive forward with singles from Lynx (‘Global Enemies’
b/w ‘Break the Mod’) and Break (‘Mr Crystal’ b/w ‘Come and Get It’) as well
as remixes on Revolve:r from techno legends John Tejada and Nomadico from
Underground Resistance.

With recent solo productions such as ‘Nebulus’ on Metalheadz and the
‘Refreshed EP’ on Soul:r, Marcus has continued to push the envelope and
married Detroit techno influences with drum and bass in a way that expresses
his own unique style. Marcus also plays sets other than drum and bass that
explore these influences, fusing together deep house, techno and soulful
broken beat rhythms. Then there was the next installment in the Fabric Live
CD series, brought to you by none other than the man himself. With the
freshest drum and bass selection around, this looks set to be one of the
best yet in this highly acclaimed series.

Taking his sound to dancefloors worldwide, Marcus has played all over the
UK, Europe, North and South America as well as Asia and Australia/New
Zealand. This includes frequent appearances at Nights such as Metalheadz as
well his own Soul:ution nights, held regularly in Birmingham, Bristol,
London (Fabric) and Moscow. Besides this, Marcus finds time for guest
appearances at many of the UKs biggest events, from Drum and Bass Arena to
Renegade Hardware, making him one of the most in demand djs on the circuit.

Fifteen years into his career and Marcus’ passion for Drum and bass remains
strong: “the music is in a good place right now and it’s setting itself up
to get better.” With Marcus Intalex continuing to push things forward, how
could anyone disagree?

Kasra (Critical Rec, UK)

Kasra is an integral part and prominent figurehead in the UK underground
scene. Using his own label Critical as a vehicle for musical expression,
Kasra has been responsible for supervising, nurturing and participating in
the growth of high quality and extremely fresh Drum and Bass.

After two years of parties, gigs and events, Kasra made what seemed like a
natural, yet gradual progression into the world of Drum and Bass music; his
clean musical style, tune selection and skills helped his DJ career gain
momentum. In the summer of 2000, Kasra found himself playing alongside award
winning DJs such as Andy C, Zinc, Calibre, Bailey and Flight who all
commented on Kasra’s innovative style resulting in him being head hunted by
numerous promoters across the globe.

Kasra’s first residency took shape towards the back end of 2000; by
recommendation, Kasra was invited to Bristol, to take charge and shake up
the Fez Club in the form of “Metric”- an event that pushed difference and
originality, combining Drum and Bass with the warming sounds of jazz and
soul. A defining moment in Kasra’s career came in 2001, when the pursuit of
tempering the dominant hardness of Drum and Bass with a warmer musicality
led him to founding Critical-a label that instantly created a unique
identity for itself by consistently putting out high quality music. As
Critical grew, as did it’s popularity; several prominent producers sought a
release on the definitive imprint resulting in various tracks, produced by
Calibre, Mathematics, Delta & Format, Sys X and Ill Skillz being signed and
unleashed onto the vinyl market.

The birth of 2005 has brought about some stellar music in the form of
‘Staggered Dub’-a track that has obtained serious support from DJs across
the Drum and Bass spectrum. The same pattern followed with Alias’ ‘Can I’
and Calibre’s ‘Domeron’-both a constant reminder of Kasra’s supervising
role, ensuring that quality music continues to flow into the vinyl market.
Written by Laura Pacheco.

And now here is the first ever Critical Records compilation. All Sounds
Electric is available both on cd and vinyl and features highlights and new
tracks from Break, Calibre, Silent Witness, Lomax, Cyantific & Kasra, Dkay &
Kasra and many more.

Icicle (Shogun Audio, UK)

Icicle was born Jeroen Snik in Holland. At the Age of 8 he first started
playing piano, progressing to the drum kit and soon making beats using a
basic midi set-up. Aged 15 he became hooked on Drum and Bass after going to
local night "Jungle Galaxy". Getting some turntables and better music making
software followed and Icicle was on his way.

Taking inspiration from the dirty basslines of heroes Jonny L and Optical
and the intricate drum patterns of Photek and Source Direct, Icicle’s cold,
tech funk sounds have quickly earned him DJ support from Goldie, LTJ Bukem,
Fabio, London Elektricity, Pendulum, Andy C, Friction, D-Bridge, Flight,
Noisia and Commix amongst countless others.

In the space of two short years he has built-up an enviable catalogue of
releases on prestige labels including Ram Records, Shogun Audio, Critical
Recordings, Renegade Hardware and Subtitles and become a mainstay on the UK
DJ circuit, regularly playing venues including Fabric and The End whilst
maintaining a hectic touring schedule stretching from Europe to Japan.

2009 sees Icicle relocating to London whilst busily working on his debut
album for DJ Friction’s Shogun Audio, the label with whom he recently signed
exclusively. Tours of Australia and New Zealand are already on the cards
alongside extensive album support alongside the rest of the Shogun family.

Proxima (Shogun Audio, UK)

Proxima was 15 when he had his first encounter with drum n bass. Not long
after that he started producing beats and buying records. With some help
from his cousin Icicle it didn’t take long before he had interested some
people with his music.

Many dnb artists have inspired Proxima over the years; Jonny L, Photek,
Source Direct, Calibre, D-Bridge and others. Because of their astonishing
sounds Proxima keeps getting pushed to take his beats to a next level.

Signed on labels such as Shogun Ltd, Crunch, Frequency, Cylon and
InnerActive, Proxima has established himself as a promising producer in the
scene. The end is nowhere to be found yet.

Leke (Aerosoul, UK)

Aerosoul was born in 1998, inspired primarily by the burgeoning underground
Jungle, Breakbeat , Soul and Hip-Hop scene, of which its founder Leke
Adesoye is a huge enthusiast. London born Leke, trained at the London
College of fashion. As a Drum n Bass and Hip-Hop fanatic, he sought to
capture that energy by incorporating his passion for music with fashion,
hence the foundation of Leke’s early Aerosoul designs, such as the now
infamous two decks “Junglist Movement” T-shirt. For 10 years Aerosoul has
brought quality street wear to a discerning market.

From humble beginnings, the label has evolved from a favorite on the UK club
scene to an internationally recognized brand. From the outset Leke employed
both legendary and up-and-coming names from the urban music scene to
represent the brand. These models have included. Omar, Roots Manuva,
Robert Owens, Don:e, Damage, Rodney P, Skitz, Zion I, Ty, A Guy
Called Gerald, Normski, Skinnyman, Bryan g and many more. In truth, the
brand has been rocked by a diverse array of celebrities from the cast of
Hollyoaks, Groove Armada, The Boo Radleys, Hospital records head honcho
‘London Elektricity’ to diva model ‘Sophie Anderson’. Proving Aerosoul’s
broad appeal to all genres of music from indie to commercial.

The Junglist Movement design took on its own momentum and infamy when it
featured in the hit cult 90,s Brit flick “Human Traffic”. Leke expanded
his collection to include the Women’s wear line “Soulero Sista” (feminine
wear 4 urban livin) bringing a much-needed feminine dimension to UK
streetwear. The later addition of A.S.Xtreme sports was inspired by the
skating and snowboarding fraternity. Throughout Aerosoul’s history the
response from the media has been hugely positive with expansive features in
publications, numerous radio and tv coverages.

Leke also continues to pursuit his thriving DJ career, and remains a much
sought after guest both in the UK and across Europe. His most recent stints
have included DJ sets for Phatfarm, Rocawear, Mecca , Journey Shoes ,
Movement and Oxfam’s Make-Poverty-History launch parties. Aerosoul
recently compiled its first music compilation - “Soul:Control” (Sounds –
Of – Underground – London ) featuring exclusive tracks from Aerosoul’s
sponsored artist Rota.

One87 & DMC (Millennium Kru)

One87 bought his first records when he was 10 years old ... and started
DJ’ing when he was 15. Solid breakbeats & phat basslines were the things in
music that attracted him the most. Little later, One87 started playing
Jungle …what became Drum ’n’ Bass later on ... which made his name well
known in Belgium & beyond ;-)

After promoting his first events (starting in 1996, with guests such as Ed
Rush & Fierce,) and opening his DJ-record shops ‘Fried Chicken Records’, he
formed the Millennium Kru. That was somewhere in the late nineties… and was
truly something else! It was one of the most skillful & diverse Drum ’n’
Bass sound systems around. The number of high-class bookings & top
residencies they did speak for themselves...

And it was also around that same time that One87 created ‘STAR WARZ’ (in
association with M.K. from Kozzmozz), without a doubt the finest Drum ’n’
Bass concept Belgium has ever seen!

In the beginning of 2008 One87 decided to go solo again, with over 750
Jungle/Drum ’n’ Bass DJ-sets under his belt. Well, not really solo… One87
can be booked together with Dutch MC master ’DMC’! Together they bring you
the freshest Drum’n’bass

MC Lowqui (Metalheadz, Essence of Chi, UK)

LowQui has been a regular on the mic now for over a decade; he has a lyrical
flow that has to be seen to be believed and his lyrical delivery regularly
wins over the most demanding ravers. With a distinctive, intimate style,
LowQui grew up on the hardcore jungle techno scene back in the day, and the
styles of the legendary Stevie Hyper D and MC GQ are resonant in his flow
and delivery. LowQui believes that the music comes first, with sporadic
rhymes subtly overlaid to enhance the atmosphere at any venue, large or
small.
Knowledge magazine interviewed LowQui for its “New Blood” feature on the
bright young things of Drum ‘n’ Bass in its February 2004 edition. Just a
few weeks later, LowQui became a Metalheadz resident and part of the
Metalheadz 10th Anniversary Tour. Knowledge couldn’t have been more accurate
in their prediction!
LowQui’s emphasis is firmly on making people dance & enjoy themselves the
whole night through...He aims to keep spreading out his freestyle mc-ing
across the world... having lots of fun along the way!

MC Wrec (Hospital Recordings, Mums The Word Rec, UK)

At 26 years of age Jon Bailey aka MC Wrec is regarded as one of Britain’s
most exciting young artists and music entrepreneurs. Known as one of the
hardest workers on the circuit, this versatile young grafter has shot to
fame in recent years after becoming the front man to the award winning live
act London Elektricity. Now Brighton based, Wrec is resident MC to
prestigious records labels including Hospital Records, Critical, Soundtrax
and W10 Recordings, plus infamous nights including Fabric Live, Heaven,
Hospitality and Friends & Family in London, The Watergate in Berlin plus
further residencies in Brighton and Bristol. Now a regular live host and
collaborator to acclaimed eclectic acts The Nextmen and The Stanton
Warriors, he’s toured across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan
and China - working with the likes of Ice T, The Black Eyed Peas, Goldie,
Afrika Bambaataa, The Streets, High Contrast, Fabio, and Kanye West’s DJ
A-Trak to name a few. Superb performances at the likes of Glastonbury,
Homelands, Big Chill, BMF Brazil, Shepherds Bush Empire, Radio 1 and The
Jazz Café, have secured his place at one of the world’s most versatile and
entertaining MC’s.

And if you thought that was enough work for one man, last year also saw the
launch of his new label ‘Mums The Word Records’ (co-run with Marc Sheinman),
featuring ltd edition presses for both The Part Time Heroes and The Nextmen.
Known for his hustle and hard work, Wrec has been described by many as one
to watch and has received considerable support from some of the industries
major players. Difficult to pigeonhole, exciting to listen to, and with
fingers in several tasty pies – you can’t knock his drive or take his eyes
off the prize. Big things in store! Get ready…
