BASS CLEF (UK) Live

http://www.myspace.com/bassclefbass
http://rootedrecords.co.uk/

... Bass Clef is rooted in deepest London and has a very distinct sound and live stage show. A dance artist who criss-crosses boundaries making friends where ever he goes, armed with his mighty trombone, effects, and percussive instruments of choice he is a rough and ready mix of dance(hall) inspirations – 21st Century urban roots music, Caribbean rhythms, fucked up glitch, hypnotic brass and classic ‘hands in the air’ rave dynamics which all swirl around the Bass Clef sound-system experience.

Newest 12″ Rollercoasters Of The Heart / So Cruel dropped in June 2011 on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label. It’s a typically joyous and skewed take on euphoria, with plenty of chopped vocals and pianos all over the place. It’ll be followed over the summer by further twelves for Brighton’s own Well Rounded label (home of Deadboy amongst others), and Lowriders which will feature tracks recorded during a week Bass Clef spent as Artist In Residence at the mighty Worm Studio in Rotterdam, home of an amazing array of analogue and modular gear.

Inner Space Break Free is his third album, released in april on cassette/MC only, by new label Magic + Dreams, run by Clef himself and Mr Brown (noisemaker of Hey Colussus). It became the first (and probably last) cassette ever reviewed in Metro, beating releases on Hyperdub, Fabric and Warp to be electronica pick of the month.

His previous two albums for Blank Tapes got excellent reviews in the dance press and online plus The Wire and Mojo (‘underground album of the month’).

In the past year he has also remixed Kasai Allstars, Au Revoir Simone, Brigitte Fontaine and Grace Jones, and he recently launched a new big band live experience called Bass Clef and The Hackney Memorial Free Jazz Marching Band.

Some Truths

Some Truths is a new project from Ralph Cumbers aka Bass Clef. Made entirely on a modular synth, with each live performance unique, written at the soundcheck, the only way.

Each track is a one-take meditation, always changing but always the same, like light and wind on water, or an oil slick in a puddle of rain. Reference points and inspiration would be Eliane Radigue, John Carpenter, Mika Vainio , Vladislav Delay and The Radiophonic Workshop.

The debut album The First Gate Of Dreaming was released on cassette by new label MAGIC + DREAMS, to be followed by second album Damnation Poisoned With Rainbows in the summer.

Some Truths will make its vinyl debut on a new 12” on Mordant Music (who first released Shackleton) alongside tracks by kindred spirit Ekoplekz.

Press Quotes
“Hackney carnival music that rolls out a procession of precise two step beats, skanking rhymths, bass with more elasticity than Stretch Armstrong..and a riot of Latin – American plumage” - NME

“He’s a badass one-man band of bass. He shakes songs out of his arms and lungs that come in somewhere between dubstep and wonky carnival with his club sets sneaking in splashes of old school UK garage and blasts of full frontal techno” – Clash

LES HOQUETS LIVE
http://www.hoquets.net/

Influenced by the Congotronics groups and their instruments made out of recuperated materials, the members of Hoquets - pronounced "OK" - use a similar attitude : this Belgian/American/French trio mostly play with instruments that they invent and construct out of wooden boards, broken strings, tin cans, etc. Their music is overflowing with energy and like no other, inspired by indie pop, hip hop, punk, funk, sound art and the strangeness of their homeland.

Featuring Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Naoki Otani (Maher Shalal Hash Baz), Yann Tambour (Stranded Horse), Marc Melià Sobrevias & Tanja Frinta (Lonely Drifter Karen), their debut album BELGOTRONICS is now available on CD/MP3/FLAC.
